pre production
mind map
I went on Mindmup to create a mind map of all my ideas to do with camera angles. I created 7 sections: sound, lighting, style, equipment, location, visuals and research. Then I branched of each of those 7 sections highlighting what choices i could/will be making in my 'how to video'.

Mindmup- https://drive.mindmup.com/
The making of the mind map was really helpful for me as i could throw all the possible ideas out and have them in front of me, by having them together my brain can process it much better visually. This helped with getting my overall idea planned as i could come back to this image and use it as a checklist. Make sure all my ideas are being used.
storyboarding
a visual representation of a film sequence that is broken down into sections to show the action happening.
canva.com - free site that you can create digital storyboards on. this is shown under.
we used the website above to create multiple camera angle shots, first i deleted the frames given by the template and replaced them with the square frames in the element section. Then i needed subjects to go in my frames so i typed in duo colour avatar, i picked a character. and cropped it to around the shoulders so i could create a medium shot. After i repeated the process but with other camera angles so i could have a variety to chose to use.
Zoom H4n storyboard
I then downloaded the Zoom H4n photos and dropped them into my storyboard. i created a close up with the first image and added a description under. Then left the other two images a full shots and had them show the whole side and bottom of the recorder. In the description section i added the needed information.

Making a story board is a very key part of pre-production since you get to see your plan visually. I am a visual learner so having a storyboard separates each idea by images leaving it very easy to understand. I made a mind map for my 'how to construct certain camera angles' video so i could get a step closer to filming since having the storyboard showed i knew what each of my shots where going to be showing how many clips i need to film. The storyboard was helpful as I used it while filming to make sure i got all my clips filmed.
How to construct certain camera angles, how to video

bullet point plan
- Title 'how to construct certain camera angles'
- have a preview of all the shots used as an introduction.
- first angle used will be an establishing shot- a shot of the college from afar showing the setting allowing people to discover the mood.
- second angle will be an extreme long shot- someone walking away from the camera this will show the distance they are creating.
- third angle will be a full shot- the subject will be jumping, by using this shot you can see the whole body to help understand what they are doing.
- fourth angle will be a medium shot- the subject will be sat down reading, allows you to see the subject and their background.
- fifth angle will be a close up- the subject will be sad or happy, this shot allows you to capture the emotions on the subjects face better.
- sixth angle will be an extreme close up- i will show the subject typing on a phone highlighting what they are searching up is important.
- seventh angle will be a dutch angle- the subject will be on the ground getting up like they have fallen over, this is taken at a slight angle showing the tension or distress.
- eighth angle will be a low angle shot- this will be the subject standing looking down at thew camera showing them being strong and powerful.
- ninth angle will be a high angle shot- this will be taken from on top of the stairs in college and the subject walking down them. this can make the subject look powerless and vulnerable.
- outro where i will summarise everything thats been discussed.
I work well using bullet point plans as they are a simple way of quickly getting sentences down for each shot. They highlight the important information needed and the format makes the plan easier to read.
script for 'how to video'
Hello, in this video i am going to be demonstrating how to construct certain camera angles and why each one is important. These are the camera angles we will be using today: 'preview'
Establishing shot- This is an establishing shot, they provide an overview of the setting from afar so the audience can identify the location and figure out the mood from certain connotations, like the weather and density.
extreme long shot- This is an extreme long shot, this shot tends to set the scene and your subjects place in it. This creates a sense of the characters relationship in the location for instance being lost.
full shot- This is a full shot, they show the entire subject as well as the background. You tend to introduce your subjects with this shot.
medium shot- This is a medium shot, they show the subject from the shoulder/chest area to the top of the head. This allows you to see the subjects facial expressions and body movements closer up as well as the background.
close up- This is a close up shot, these are taken in close range making it more personal. It allows the subject to establish a strong emotional connection with the audience as you can see more details in the subjects face.
extreme close up- This is an extreme close up, they focus on a specific object, telling you its important. They are much more intense than a close up and allow the viewer to enter the characters personal space.
dutch angle- This is a dutch angle, it is a tilted shot. This is used to create a sense of unease or disorientation for the viewer. The director uses this to to tell the audience something is wrong.
low angle- This is a low angle shot, the camera will be lower down looking up to convey the subject as a powerful and strong individual. This tends to be used for heroic or villainous power.
high angle- This is a high angle shot, the camera will be placed higher up looking down to convey the subject as powerless and vulnerable. This makes the audience possibly want to protect the them.
These are most of the camera angles used in any production. They help manipulate the audience by giving them different experiences. They enhance the narrative and the theme which effect the overall mood.
Production Plan

a production plan is important as you plan when you are going to do each task. This helps keep you on task and productive with completing your how to video if you stay on track.
camera movement
most useful camera movements
- boom/jib
- tilt
- truck
- dolly

boom/jib- this is where you move the camera up and down capturing the subject/object.
- This was my second attempt of filming a boom/jib. The first one i recorded only went half way up the tripod while i got feedback saying i should have the object completely out of frame when going up, so i recorded again which is on the left.
Truck- this is a left to right camera movement that follows a subject/object.
I recorded this by placing my phone on the table and sliding it across left and right to capture the Zoom H4n. I went far enough both ways so the object was out of shot like i did on the boom/jib.
Reconnaissance - scouting for a location to film you 'how to videos' in.
- suitability for filming
- health and safety

Risk assessment
- Safety, i will be going outside in the public around roads etc.
- Never be on my own, be in a pair or more.
- Make sure i have permission to film in each location.
LOCATION RECCE
(RECONNAISSENCE)SCOUTING OUT
Q - What were your first thoughts when looking at the location(s)? (Online & In Person)
A - the locations could be very busy and i might not be able to get complete focus on my subject.
PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE
Q - What pictures did you take of your location(s)? Please put them in this section and comment on why they are appropriate to film in.
A -
DIMENSIONS
Q - How big was the location? Does it fulfill all your needs for your project?
A - the college grounds and open areas. The locations wont be as stimulating for the audience if i stay in the same area so i will have to use multiple locations on the grounds that look different and give a mew setting and vibe. Or i will just video outside where there is a constant change in scenery if you move around.
LIGHTING
Q - What was the quality of lighting like within the location? Was it natural (sunlight, fire) or artificial (bulbs/torches? Perhaps some pictures of what the lighting within the space with natural lighting and artificial lighting would be beneficial for your project?
A - My locations are using natural when outside and high key lighting when inside the college as its a generally bright place.
SAFETY
Q - How safe is the location? Is it near any roads? Is it in an area which is out of bounds? (REMEMBER FOR EVERY NEW LOCATION YOU ASSESS FOR YOUR PROJECT, YOU NEED TO HAVE A RISK ASSESSMENT AND LOCATION RECCE FORM THAT MATCHES THE LOCATION FOR THE PROJECT.)
A - my locations inside the college are safe as i am, in a building full of staff, but i could still injure myself by tripping over etc. My locations outside are not safe as i am in the public, there are roads near by and certain areas like the lexicon don't give permission for you to film so i would not have easy access unless i go further away from the college.
RESTRICTIONS & LEGAL MATTERS
Q - Do you know if the land is owned by anyone? Are you sure you have permission to film on there? If not, it might be best to find another location with easy access. If so, we will need to see a permission to film document included within your work. (Including your Permission to Film document/email/slip on here will also let your client know that you have the correct access in where you need to film.)
A - I wont be able to gain access to film in the Lexicon, but i have easy access in the college grounds as i am a media student. As i wont be filming in the Lexicon i will film just outside the college or in my street which has a small park and wooded area attached to it. However i will need to gain permission from my media teachers to leave the grounds to film during lesson time.
overall proposal for my 'how to video'
Proposal for
'how to video'
video
Prepared by
neve pitman
For

Of
BRACKNELL & WOKINGHAM COLLEGE
- INTRODUCTION:Within the first step in making your proposal, please write down answers to the following:
- Q) What have you been asked to do?
- A) to make a how to video on a certain subject we have chosen from the breif, mine is camera angles
- Q) Is the product a moving image (video) / still image (photo) and what is it suitable for? (Television broadcast / Internet streaming)
- A) my product will be a moving image and its more suitable for internet streaming as you find how to videos all ove youtube a popular streaming site.
- Q) How long do you intend to plan your project? ( Min 2 minutes Max 4 minutes)
- A) my video will be around 2-3 minutes.
- BASIC PLAN:my product will be explaining camera angles and describing why they are being used in a film narrative. i will either use a person to model out the camera angles or i will use an object as it will be easier to use. my filming will be done inside so i don't have any excess noise in the background. i will film in a quiet room so my voice can be heard clearly.
- THEMES:i will try keep the language basic so people don't struggle to follow along and make sure the lighting is high key so everything is clearly visible.
- AUDIENCE:my video topic has a wide range audience as any age group could be interested but it's most commonly going to be viewed by students as a learning tool. My product will be streamed on a streaming site like youtube which is commonly viewed by a younger audience but it does vary.
- APPEALING CONTENT:
- my product will appeal to the student target audience as it's a camera angles 'how to video' which will give out the needed information for students to learn how to create these angles and what they are. The lighting will be neutral lighting and adapt it if needed to a higher key. I will use a person to show the camera angles as people will be much more entertaining to use. My location can be outside for neutral lighting and inside for high key lighting. my dialogue will be filmed inside a quiet or soundproof room so everything I'm saying gets captured clearly.
- LEGAL, ETHICAL AND MORAL ISSUES:
- I will use a creative commons soundtrack in the background and don't give appropriate credit. This is because
- TALENT/CONTRIBUTORS:
- i will be using Contributors in my production as i will have a scripted position for them to act in to showcase the certain camera angle in the best way. They wont have a script to read as i will be narrating and adding the sound over in post production.
- LOCATION(S):
- i will be filming on the college grounds as this will highlight the student learning aspect well.
- BUDGET:
- This is a college project so its free anything we need we just pay for. The maximum amount would be £20 needed for travel and possible props.
- equipment used: phone, lightsaber, book, bowling.
- PRODUCTION ROLES:
- I will be doing everything but the 'acting' in my how to video.
