three point lighting

The lighting is important in media productions because it creates a visual mood for the audience, different lighting colours or set up will lead to certain connotations. Lighting also visually tells the audience where to look highlighting whats important in the scene.

the uses of lighting in media

  • tells the audience where to look
  • reflects the psychology of the subject thats being filmed
  • helps define the genre of the film

set up

to set up you need to make sure your subject is in the middle and is the main focus point. Next the lights need to be in the moved into the correct positions. You start with the key light, have this at a 45 angle facing the subject. Then you go to the light control and change the lights to make the subject stand out more. Make sure this control is switched on then put the master switch on this makes sure that all the lights will work.

three point lighting

Key light

it is the primary light source of a scene. It has a heavy influence on how a shot can look and feel. it creates harsh shadows on the subject

Fill light

It is the secondary light and is traditionally positioned opposite the key light to help fill the shadows created by the key light.  This helps create a more even lighting style.

Backlight

This light hits the subject from behind. The use of lighting helps create a silhouette bringing you subject out and away from the background.

gels

gels are little bits of plastic that go over the camera and change the colour of the lighting.  It can bring more realism into the film and add an another level for the visual detail to the story.

tones

  • blues and greens are mostly used to create cold atmospheres.
  • reds and warm colours can be used for love scenes to create a romantic atmosphere.
  • orange and some browns, they can be used to enhance people and make them look better. it's a common filter used on apps.

reflective board

this is a special reflective surface used to redirect light to the subject. for instant a small reflective board will give off a harsher light so its used in scenes where you want more distinct shadows and lowered contrast, while a larger one will be more soft creating less pronounced shadows and another transitions between light and dark areas.

white board - artificial lighting without flash

  • gives a neutral clear soft light.
  • works equally well in studio and outside.
  • week at reflecting light so does need to be held closer to the subject.

gold board - adding life to skin tones

  • adds more warm tones to the light.
  • add a golden shine to the subject.
  • useful at providing fill light.
